Stable Until It Wasn't: The Graveyard of Coins That Promised You Safety
There's a particular flavor of crypto loss that hits different from the others. When your meme coin craters 90%, you had some warning — volatility is in the job description. But when your stablecoin loses its peg, something philosophically disturbing happens. The thing that was supposed to be the safe harbor, the place you parked money while you figured out your next move, turned out to be built on a foundation somewhere between "complicated math" and "absolute vibes."
The stablecoin graveyard is more crowded than most people realize. And the residents didn't all die the same way — some collapsed in spectacular public fashion, some slowly bled out over months, and some were revealed to be barely alive to begin with. Understanding what happened to them, and why, is the difference between smart capital preservation and accidentally holding the next entry in this hall of shame.
TerraUSD: The Collapse That Rewrote the Category
If you were anywhere near crypto in May 2022, you watched UST — TerraUSD — lose its dollar peg in real time over the course of several days. What made this particularly instructive is that UST was, at its peak, the third-largest stablecoin in existence. Tens of billions of dollars were parked there by people who believed the algorithmic peg mechanism was sound.
The mechanism was not sound. UST maintained its dollar value through a mint-and-burn relationship with LUNA, the Terra ecosystem's native token. When you needed more UST, you burned LUNA to create it. When UST drifted below a dollar, you were supposed to burn UST to create LUNA, theoretically restoring the peg through arbitrage. The fatal flaw: this only works if LUNA retains value. Once LUNA started falling, the mechanism required minting ever-increasing quantities of LUNA to defend the peg, which diluted LUNA further, which required more minting, which is the economic equivalent of trying to bail out a sinking boat by pouring the water back in through the other side.
Within days, LUNA went from roughly $80 to fractions of a cent. UST holders lost most of their "stable" savings. The event wiped out an estimated $40 billion in value and triggered a broader market contagion that took down several other crypto companies. The lesson: "algorithmic stability" is not stability. It's a bet on a mechanism holding under pressure — and pressure is exactly what stress-tests mechanisms.
Iron Finance: The Partial-Collateral Experiment That Ended in Minutes
Before Terra made depegging famous, Iron Finance offered an early preview of what happens when stablecoin collateral models get creative. IRON was a partially-collateralized stablecoin — backed partly by USDC (a real dollar-backed stablecoin) and partly by TITAN, the project's own governance token.
When TITAN's price started dropping, the collateral backing IRON became worth less than a dollar. Holders began redeeming IRON for its collateral components. This required minting more TITAN to cover the redemptions. More TITAN supply meant further TITAN price drops. The feedback loop took TITAN from around $60 to effectively zero in under 24 hours — one of the fastest complete collapses in DeFi history.
Mark Cuban, who had publicly praised the project, lost money on it and later acknowledged the risk of algorithmic mechanisms. If that sentence doesn't make you scrutinize your stablecoin holdings, nothing will.
Basis Cash, Empty Set Dollar, and the Algorithmic Graveyard
TerraUSD and Iron Finance weren't aberrations — they were the most prominent entries in a long line of algorithmic stablecoin experiments that failed. Basis Cash, inspired by the original Basis project that shut down before launching due to regulatory concerns, launched in late 2020 and spent most of 2021 trading significantly below its dollar peg. Empty Set Dollar attempted a similar seigniorage model and experienced similar results.
The pattern across these projects is consistent: algorithmic stablecoins work reasonably well during bull markets when demand is growing and the ecosystem token retains value. They fail during contractions, which is precisely when you most want a stable store of value. The thing that's supposed to be safe fails when safety matters most. That's not a minor design flaw.
What About the Survivors? Not All Stablecoins Are Equal
It would be unfair to condemn the entire category. USDC and USDT — the two largest stablecoins — have maintained their pegs through multiple market crises, though not without controversy.
Tether (USDT) has faced years of questions about its reserve composition. Regulatory settlements, opacity around exactly what assets back each dollar of USDT, and periodic audits that critics describe as inadequate have kept a persistent cloud over the world's most-used stablecoin. It hasn't broken its peg in any sustained way, but "trust us, the reserves are fine" is a posture that deserves ongoing scrutiny, especially for US-based holders who have little regulatory recourse if things go wrong.
USDC, issued by Circle and subject to more transparent reserve reporting, has generally been regarded as more trustworthy — though it had its own brief depeg in March 2023 when Silicon Valley Bank (which held a portion of Circle's reserves) collapsed. USDC dropped to around $0.87 before recovering when the FDIC backstopped SVB depositors. The lesson there: even well-constructed stablecoins carry counterparty risk from the traditional financial system they're tied to.
DAI, issued by MakerDAO, takes a different approach — over-collateralized by crypto assets, with its parameters governed by a DAO. It's maintained its peg through significant market stress, though it has increasingly incorporated USDC as collateral, meaning it's not as independent from centralized stablecoins as its original design intended.
What You Should Actually Scrutinize Before Parking Cash
For US-based holders, here's a practical framework for evaluating any stablecoin:
Reserve transparency: Can you verify what backs each dollar? Is there a real audit from a reputable firm, or a vague attestation? USDC publishes monthly reserve reports. Demand the same standard from anything else.
Mechanism type: Fiat-backed, crypto-collateralized, or algorithmic? Algorithmic has a body count. Approach with extreme caution or not at all.
Regulatory exposure: Is the issuer subject to US regulatory oversight? This matters both for your legal recourse and for the issuer's survival odds as regulation tightens.
Counterparty risk: Where are the reserves held? The SVB situation showed that "backed by dollars in a bank" contains a hidden dependency on that bank not failing.
Peg history: Has this stablecoin ever drifted significantly from $1.00? Under what conditions? What happened?
The False Comfort of the Word "Stable"
The stablecoin category is unique in crypto because the branding does active harm. When something is called volatile, investors price in risk. When something is called stable, they don't — and that misalignment between perceived and actual risk is where savings go to disappear quietly.
The graveyard keeps accepting new residents. New algorithmic experiments launch regularly, each claiming to have solved the problems that killed its predecessors. Some are genuinely innovative. Some are recycled failure with better marketing. The only way to tell the difference is to look past the word "stable" and examine what's actually underneath it.
Your safe harbor should be verifiably safe. Otherwise it's just a harbor that hasn't had a storm yet.
